Very early George III sterling silver one pint tankard hallmarked London 1764 by Marmaduke Daintrey. The tankard has been later engraved in 1884 as a military presentation relating to the Oxford Light Infantry. The tankard is profusely decorated in repousse style with a floral design and a repetitive pattern around the base.

The handle is topped with a silver acanthus leaf. The central cartouche is engraved. Diameter of rim: 80 mm. Diameter of base: 85 mm. Maker's Mark: Marmaduke Daintrey. Oxford & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry: The regiment was formed as a consequence of the 1881 Childers Reforms by an amalgamation of the 43rd (Monmouthshire) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry) and the 52nd (Oxfordshire) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry) forming the 1st & 2nd battalions of the Oxfordshire Light Infantry on 1st July 1881. The 2nd Battalion was based in the city of Oxford. Summary: As can be seen from the photos this is an interesting and collectable item, an amazing 256 years old! The tankard was made during the first few years of the reign go George III so is collectable as a piece of silver but with the added interest of being linked to the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Oxford Light Infantry, engraved sharply after its formation.
