Antique 1828 Sterling Silver English Chamberstick Candleholder Candlestick C Fox

ANTIQUE STERLING SILVER ENGLISH CHAMBERSTICK 1828 & 1835 MAKER MARKS. Chambersticks were designed to be carried and were mainly used for escorting someone to and from their chambers without getting wax everywhere.

Like all chambersticks, this one has a round wax pan (6 in diameter) with a candleholder in the center. The scroll handle supports a detachable conical-shape extinguisher (snuffer).

This chamberstick is somewhat unusual because it also has a slot attached to the side of the candle receptacle designed to hold a pair of candle trimming scissors. I've seen very few examples of chambersticks with this added feature. The underside of the wax pan is marked with the sterling silver lion hallmark, London leopard's head, duty mark for King George IV, and the date code "n" for 1828. It also has the maker mark of "CF" in an indented oval, indicating that it was made by a London silversmith named Charles Thomas Fox.

It has the sterling lion hallmark, duty mark for King William IV, and the date code "u" for 1835. The maker mark of "IW over WM" is for the London silversmith firm of John Wrangham & William Moulson. Both pieces are made of sterling silver and have a combined weight of 14.4 ounces (409 grams). Condition of this antique chamberstick is VERY GOOD.

The snuffer has a few small dings and I see a tiny dent on the rim of the candle receptacle. The piece has been polished recently (not by me) but still has some minor tarnish. Overall, this early 19th century chamberstick looks great and displays beautifully.

Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. Closeup of Candle Receptacle & Holder For Scissors. English Silver Markings - 1828 Date Code.
