Antique 18th Century Georgian Sterling Silver Pap Boat London 1797

Antique 18th Century Georgian Sterling Silver Pap Boat London 1797. This is a nice little piece of original Georgian silver dating from the latter year of 18th century.

The piece carries full U. The pap boat is typically traditional in shape, being relatively shallow in form with an oval main body and a pouring lip to one end. For the uninitiated, a pap boat would of been used for feeding young children'pap', which was a mixture of bread and milk, the pouring lip would of been placed up to the child's mouth. These type of devices may also of been used for feeding invalids who may of been incapable of feeding themselves. The type of pap boat you owned would of been a reflection of your social status at the time and what was affordable to you - I've personally seen carved wood, earthenware, pewter and silver examples - the very finest silver examples will have decorative engraving or cast moulded decoration and a gilded interior to the bowl. The example on offer here is a fairly regular size and measures 12.4cm at its greatest length and has a width of 6.7cm across the bowl - its height is approximately 3.6cm - the total unpacked weight is 43.6g. The overall condition of the piece is generally in so far as it retains a good shape and there are no dents to the item - historically, there seems to have been some kind of issue to one edge (this detail is shown in pictures 9, 10 and 11) - the edge of the silver has thinned a little and looks a tiny bit crimped when looked at under magnification - also, there is a minuscule split to silver at the edge but you wouldn't see this unless it was under strong magnification. I suspect it may of been dropped or taken a bash at some point in its life and a silversmith has tidied it up for the owner. All in all, as mentioned above, it retains a good shape and the old repair is relatively minor from a cosmetic perspective.
