The swing handle is likewise Beaded at the edges and features a central decoration on entwined garland leading to a central cartouche in the center top of the handle which is also decorated with chasing on each side of the cartouche. The center of the bowl is decorated with a hand chased Lioness carrying a flower/foliage in her mouth.
The foot is also pierced, decorated with swagged garlands and beaded around the perimeter of the foot. This bears 4 clear hallmarks on the underside of the bowl as follows: MFCH (for Fenton Cheswick Co), A Lion Rampant, a Crown (for Sheffield) and a a highly stylized S for 1779. It also bears the makers' cipher (MFCH) on one side of the handle end at the hinge pin.For perspective, this bowl was crafted a mere 3 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed. All the intricate grill work was crafted with NO machinery and largely by candlelight or the light of a whale oil lamp! Excellent condition with NO bends, breaks, dents or losses. There is evidence of two very old repairs/handwork joining on the backside of the basket as noted in photos.
I've left this in the tarnish in which it was found so that the next owner may polish it to the level of their own satisfaction/patina preference. Rest assured that it will clean and polish beautifully and I had to restrain myself from doing so. This measures 13 1/4 long at the top of the bowl.
It stands 3 1/4" high to the edge of the bowl and approximately 10 3/4" high to the top of the handle. It measures 11 across from side to side at the handle. It weighs approximately 745 grams. The body of the bowl, especially, shows ample evidence of being hand worked with its subtly rippled texture. An exceptional early and fine example of Silversmithing and a remarkable addition to any collection of Antique Silver.WHO WE ARE: We are located in the rural suburbs of Syracuse, NY (about 4 1/2 hours north of NYC and 1 hour south of Canada).
