This beautiful antique Georgian solid sterling silver ladle is in very good condition, is quite large, and has great heft in your hand. I polished the ladle prior to listing, so it is sparkling and shines brilliantly. There are no dents and only minor wear marks and faint scratches from normal use and cleaning. There are some very slight bends in the stem of the handle, in the area of the hallmarks location, that are only noticed when you look at the stem handle from the side. The ladle has a hand chased armorial of a roaring lion, or panther, or leopard, on the tip of the handle, as shown. As stated, the ladle is heavy, weighing 7.28 ounces and is 12 long in total. The bowl of the ladle measures 4 1/8" wide, 3 1/2" long, and 1 1/4 deep. The hallmarks are extremely worn and faint for some reason, most likely due to frequent polishing, or possibly some type of repair was made to this location of the stem handle at some point in time, maybe to straighten it? You can easily see the last of the hallmarks, which is the capital "A" as shown, which I believe to be the date mark.
None of the other marks are discernible, although you can see where they were located, and I can partially make out a maker's mark of ____ ____ & Co. ", the two blanks being letters, the first blank looks like a "G" or an "E, the second blank is unclear. The maker is not discernible due to the lack of crispness remaining in the marks, as previously stated. The assay office mark is not discernible to me at all.Even though the marks are unclear, I still believe this piece. To be Georgian due to its construction, hallmark patterns, and the hand chased decoration on the handle. Dating the ladle is difficult, as it depends on which assay office the piece was registered in, and again I cannot determine the assay mark on this ladle. So I feel that the capital "A" date mark, along with the wear pattern and hand chased decoration on the ladle, dates the ladle from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. Please review all of the photographs for additional condition reporting.
