Antique Irish Sterling Silver Presentation Trophy Loving Cup GW Dublin 1796 Rare
FROM AN AMAZING LOCAL ESTATE COLLECTION. This unique Georgian Irish sterling silver trophy presentation loving cup was made in Dublin 1796 by George Wheatley. The cup has beautiful naturalistic flowing scroll, flower, and leaf designs. There are two almost heart design shields for initials which have been left without engraving. This turnip trophy was skillfully engraved on the base: PREMIUM GRANTED by the Newmarket Farming Society for the Best Crop of Turnips or Mangel Worsel 1832.
On the lower rim the engraving says: CHALLENGEABLE Won by Mr James 1832. The fact that a trophy as lovely as this was presented for the best turnip crop shows how vital and valuable the turnip was to the Irish. This trophy came from a good local estate. A gorgeous Irish silver Georgian trophy presentation cup! Rare, one of a kind and made by one of Irelands most distinguished silversmiths.
