This is a stylish George III sterling silver stirrup cup. A stirrup cup was used by a person on horseback for a cup of wine or other alcoholic drink which was offered to someone going on a journey, or at a meet just before a hunt. The case is wooden with a leather covering in brown with gold details. It is lined in blue satin and velvet, and has a nice firm latch. This stirrup cup is gilded and is in good condition with very minimal dents as you would expect for a piece of this age, some of the leather has come away from the wooden case.
This piece has a full British hallmark which dates it to 1802. Full British hallmarks with the leopard's head of the London Assay Office , the lion passant for sterling silver, King George III's head and the date letter "G" for 1802. Silversmiths Makers mark TB - Thomas Wilkes Barker. Alison Chapman as seen on ITV's Dickinson's Real Deal!
