Heavy Sterling Silver Irish Sauce Boat in a lovely ovoid shape, has an engraved monogram on one side. The legs have pretty shell tops with hooved. Feet, and surrounded by a great array of radiating flutes with plain punched beading mirrored in the rim also. The looped double scroll handle has an elegantly decorated thumb piece really tops off this fine example of great irish silver.

It is hallmarked for Dublin. Similar examples are listed to be attributed also to Matthew West, who was a Dublin silver smith at a similar but later time, however his marks don't have the pointed shield shape to them, which this one does. Not all Dublin silver from the mid 18th century had the date letter added so its hard to tell a precise date. The authority on Irish silver Douglas Bennett in his book "Collecting Irish Silver" dates this makers mark variation from 1758 to 1761. So we are taking this to be C1760.

It is either late George II or early George III, Irish silver sauce boat in a lovely shape quite a rare thing. Approximate weight of sauce boat is 163 grams or 5.26 troy ounces. Are 169mm (6.6") length and 103 mm (4") height and.

And 79 mm (3.1). In good order with surface wear and scratches commensurate with age, see photos.

Some very shallow dents and scratches, front foot isn't flat but all very minor issues. Marks are a little warn, but very still clear. Please see photos and send us a question if further clarity is required. Please see our other listings for additional Sterling Silver and collectable items.
