His impressive piece of silver was c. Rafted by the world famous royal silversmiths, Mappin & Webb. In the early years of the reign of George V, hallmarked for London 1912. Please note that, in my opinion, the pictures do not do it justice, it was very difficult to photograph due to reflections. As you would expect from Mappin & Webb, the craftsmanship and sheer quality are outstanding.
For example, the lid is beautifully engineered with flush hinges. Even the nut that holds the knop in place internally is hallmarked with the lion passant for sterling silver. The teapot is in a good gauge of silver and very heavy, weighing 870g. This is 30.69oz and just under 28 troy ounces.
In this case, most of the weight will be of solid silver. In lovely antique condition, hard to believe it is 107 years old, you can.Imagine the touch of class that this large and impressive stylish pot would bring to any tea table! The name of Mappin & Webb is synonymous with quality. It was formed in 1864 and has had a long relationship with royalty.
This began in the late 19th century - in 1897 Queen Victoria granted a royal warrant as silversmiths. Mappin & Webb has maintained this position for the five subsequent monarchs and today holds a Royal Warrant as Silversmiths to Queen Elizabeth and to HRH the Prince of Wales. Furthermore, in 2012, the firms master craftsman was appointed to the position of Crown Jeweller.Mappin & Webb; London 1912. It is just under 20cm in height to the tip of the pointed finial; 21.5cm in width from the end of the spout to the end of the handle; about 13cm in depth across the lower and most bulbous part of the body. As noted, it weighs a very heavy 870g, most of which will be solid silver, it is not weighted in the base.
It is in lovely antique condition and ready for use, hard to believe it is 107 years old, just the usual signs of wear commensurate with age and use, scratches here and there, etc. There are no visible dents or dings - the gauge of silver is too thick. The lid and hinge are in good order and it opens and closes fine. Any dark patches, etc are reflections or bits of age-related patina. This is a superb antique Mappin & Webb solid silver teapot, in lovely condition and with a heavy weight of silver, fully hallmarked for London 1912.
