George III Sterling Silver Quart Tankard London 1761
A fine George III sterling silver quart tankard Date : Hallmarked in London for Fuller White in 1761 Period : George III Origin. London, England Decoration : Reeded band around the body. Double c scroll handle with acanthus leaf thumb piece Size : Height 15.6cm Condition : Excellent. The scratch weight denotes that this was 25 troy ounces and thirteen pennyweights (0.65) when the scratch weight was applied in 1762. Ignoring the possibility that the weight when taken was inaccurate then this has lost 1.35 troy ounces since 1762. That equates to 0.16 grams per annum.
Silver oxidises and when cleaned weight is lost every time. I have been involved in the antiques business since 1971. My career took a leap forward when I joined Bonhams in 1976.
