The sconce holder has a bulbed, notch middle and has a holder for a snuffer but this, unfortunately, is missing. To the back is a looped handle decorated with a floral motif. The sconce holder and the interior of the sconce are gilded so I suspect the whole piece would also have been originally and that the majority has worn away. The sconce is removable and will accommodate a candle measuring up to 11mm (0.4) in diameter. Please note that there is a repair to this item as detailed fully below. It is hallmarked to the sconce and the base for Sheffield 1824 with the makers mark of John & Thomas Settle although the date letter on the base is too rubbed to read. This piece is in usable condition with no dents and the decorative work is nice and crisp. However, as mentioned above, there is a visible repair. At some stage, the sconce holder has clearly come away from the plate and been soldered back.
Although the repair has been quite well done, there is a ring of darker silver around the foot of the sconce holder which I suspect is a remnant of the solder used for the repair which is probably lead. Also, the sconce holder tilts forward slightly.Ive shown all these aspects clearly in the photos below and they are reflected in the low asking price for this 194 year old item which is still very beautiful and functional. Height - 4.5 cm (1.75) Base - 6.8 cm (2.7) by 5.7 cm (2.25) Length - 7 cm (2.75) from front to back of handle Sconce - 3.4 cm (1.3) square Weight - 78 grams. Please see the photos below which will enlarge if clicked on and feel free to get in touch with any questions. Prices are calculated to include the weight of packaging as well as the weight of the item. To ensure items are safe in transit, I package them very well and, unfortunately, this does increase mailing costs somewhat. All packages must be signed for upon receipt. Should you wish to return an item, please contact me as soon as possible after receiving it. I source and re-home high quality antique and vintage silver at wholesale prices. On the odd occasion, I come across something that might have had a bit of a rough life but deserves a second chance rather than being consigned to the melting pot.
