Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a gorgeous pair of Peter, Ann & William Bateman Sterling Silver George III serving spoons, c. These lovely spoons have engraved decoration on handle fronts with armorial. The spoons have a bright gilt bowl with with deeply chased fruit design and scalloped outer edge that was added later to appeal to the Victorian taste.

Measure 8 1/2" long with the bowl end being 1 5/8" wide. Combined weight is 110 grams. Both spoons are in excellent Estate condition with no noted damage although engraved armorials are faint (see photos). The silver is marked with English hallmarks for London, Sterling, date letter for 1798 with makers stamp "PB, AB, WB" for Peter, Ann and William Bateman (stamp is worn). The Batemans are among the most desirable silversmiths of this period. History: Berry spoons are a type of spoon that have a chased decoration of berries or fruits on the interior of the bowl. Silver berry spoons that have marks dating prior to the mid-19th Century originated as plain serving spoons with the berry or fruit decoration added later. This practice started in the Mid-19th Century to adapt earlier silver spoons to the elaborate tastes of the prosperous Victorian owner.

Although today we categorize all spoons with the berry and fruit decoration as "berry" spoons, Georgian berry spoons didn't exist and these spoons should be more accurately described as a "Georgian spoon in Old English pattern with later decoration".
