Rare Georgian provincial sterling coffee pot Dorothy Langlands Newcastle England

A large scale solid silver coffee pot - a wonderful example of a hand raised Georgian coffee pot by a female maker with an ovoid body decorated with ribbed bands and palmette border on a raised and stepped foot with a square spout and handle and acorn finial to the hinged lid. This design captures all of the decorative elements of the Regency period down to the shell thumb pieces and the decoration to the spout and the egg and dart borders. It's wonderful to see all the fine planishing marks to the interior of the base and the interior of the body which are indicative of the quality of its make.

This is a rare large scale piece for Dorothy Langlands for whom you generally see smaller items like spoons etc. Dorothy Langlands was a widow who took over her husbands business in 1804 and ran it successfully until her retirement in 1815. Marked to the base for Newcastle provincial silver, which for this period includes both Newcastle and the London leopard head mark and for Dorothy Langlands hallmarked 1809 - total weight 985grms - overall dimensions 275mm high x 290mm total length x 135mm wide - 1809 England. Condition notes: in good condition with minor age related wear - a number of areas of tarnishing and discolouration, small dent at base of handle shown in last photograph (not obvious and difficult to photograph but is a pressure dent above the bone insulator), small dings across the band on the body (as shown in photograph 1 and 9) and small creases in the inner angle of the top handle (as shown in photograph 10 and 11).

Lid and hinge work well. There is a seam line at the waist of the foot and inside the base can be seen an internal collar for support (see photograph 6), however I believe this to be part of the original construction and not a repair. Although our notes are numerous, all of these do not detract from what is a lovely example of an important piece of early silver which is in very good condition for its age.
